Online privacy (or lack thereof) will be an important topic in 2016. It already is! However, most people don’t know that their online behavior is being watched. And if they do, most don’t realize how much information is being collected.
We visited all the main candidate’s websites from both parties. With a tool called Ghostery, we tracked the trackers to see how much the 2016 presidential candidates were watching their visitors. Our findings were not what we expected.
1. Trump Leads While Hillary Trails:
2. Democrats Spying More Than Republicans
3. Most Used Trackers: ‘Google Analytics’ & ‘Facebook Custom Audience’
All 2016 presidential candidates were using both of these while 21 other trackers were picked up by Ghostery only once (Bing Ads, Advertising.com, Marketo, etc. Full list available upon request.)
Per Wikipedia: “Google Analytics is a freemium web analytics service offered by Google that tracks and reports website traffic.”
Per Facebook.com: Custom Audiences let you reach customers you already know with ads on Facebook. You can upload a list of email addresses or phone numbers of at least 20 people and we’ll deliver your ad to those people if they’re on Facebook. (…)”
4. Google and Facebook had the most trackers.
The same company can have multiple trackers and some of the 2016 presidential candidates were using them to various extents. Google, with ‘Analytics’, ‘Dynamic Remarketing’ or the ads that follow you, ‘DoubleClick’, ‘AdWords Conversion’, and many others had the most presence with 48 different trackers in only 11 candidate websites.
What do you think about being watched by all 2016 presidential candidates ? Are you agree with that ?
